The Importance of the Child's Home - The First Academy
Posted August 31st 2014

Our institutions of teaching and learning — our schools and daycares – are often touted as the “silver bullet” that will sustain society. But in actuality, institutions of teaching and learning are secondary to the institution of family, which is the most critical socializing agent for young children. I’m not really certain and I don't know what it is going to take, but I am hopeful that sometime, in the not too distant future, there will perhaps be a well-informed, fervent public opinion that to preserve the sanctity of family life is the most important thing that we as members of society can do. Developmentalist Urie Brofenbrenner once said: Children need people (families) in order to become “uniquely human”. The most important work to spur children's growth and development is done quietly in our homes, in our neighborhoods, our parishes, mosques and in our communities. No government can really "love" a child and no policy can substitute for a family's love and care. But isn't it strange that we have "degrees" for murder but not for "love". Love is as ancient a prescription as any tonic we know — it heals, it inspires and it motivates! Yet many of our young children suffer from the lack of it. What our children need most of all is heavy dosages of love. Famed educator Jonathan Kozol once said that "the most deadliest of all possible sins is the mutilation of a child's spirit, for such mutilation undercuts the life principle of trust." And the acclaimed poet, writer and actor, the late Maya Angelou, once said: I've learned that people will forget what you have said and they will forget what you have done, but they will never, ever forget how you made them feel. Also, it has been said that "no one has been able to measure, not even poets, what the heart can hold."

And so it is with our very young children. The "significant" adults in children's lives are their emotional tool kit. We must always remember that we can either build children up or tear them down in an instant, not just simply by the words we use but by our actions, our deeds and terms of engagement. We are the ones who are charged with the awesome task of teaching children notions of justice and fairness, ideas about personal responsibility and perseverance, honor and integrity and attitudes about work and effort as well as beliefs about what it is not. So we can never afford to undermine the fundamental relationships that exist between parents and/or significant caregivers in the lives of children. The undeniable fact is that our children’s future is shaped by both the values of their parents, guardians, grandparents and the legacy of their ancestors—as well as by the policies of our nation. Children need more than our educational institutions can teach them. All of us as parents and significant others in the lives of young children are responsible for the socialization and the education of them. So, what I am really trying to convey here is that the healing of our nation really begins in the homes of its people—all of its people!

What are your thoughts regarding the impact of the institution of family and the institution of education on the lives of young children? How can the two entities work in tandem to ensure a more productive and thriving future society? What types of polices can be enacted to support family life and the reduction of the systemic economic, social and environmental disparities that often exist in communities throughout this nation?

I think that everyone should work together as one equal partner unity to have a well develop society community. It is true that parents are the first teacher to teach their child the importance of the world. But the educator will increase their education, the child will make process in understanding the knowledge and content. It is a great idea for everyone to gets involved, so the child can see that everyone is working together as one and not individual.

I think Dr. Wanda Roundtree makes a good point. I agree that no policy can substitute for a family's love and care. The institution of family greatly influences the institution of education, because the way a child is treated or exposed to at home can affect how the child does in school. Children are shaped by the values they learn in the home from their parents or guardians so it is important that parents take the responsibility for socialization seriously. Parents can be more involved in their child's education by supporting them at home through positive relationships that foster love. Children may be more likely to learn and participate any negative behavior that they experience from the people that are close to them. Policies that can be enacted to support family life could be programs that offer help economically for struggling families who may not make enough money, programs in the community that inform families of the importance of health and nutrition, or meetings that teach parents how to be involved in their child's education.

The impact of the institutions of family, and education on the lives of young children is very significant. The family is the building block on where the child forms and builds their understanding, knowledge, belief, self, and much more. Thus, the importance of the family to set the child on the correct path is very important. How the child is taught or brought up, will be shown in the educational years. Thus, the institution of the family has the biggest role on the child. In addition, the institution of education is also very significant in the lives of young children. Education is what sets the child in motion. This is where the child learns and builds their interest, and understanding in many things. Therefore, how the institution of education impacts the child, will show in how well they do with their education. Just based on these two things, I feel that these two institutions need to understand each other, and work together to ensure that both areas are functioning smoothly and progress is being made. When there is a strong communication line between the two institutions, then those children will be more productive and successful in both areas. The policy that I feel that can be enacted to support the family, would be financial help. When a family is facing hard financial times, then that family can be taking short cuts in life, and these short cuts can affect their children greatly. Either nutrition, clothing, health, etc, all these short cuts can affect the child, and their education.

I agree with Dr. Wanda Roundtree Henderson. They say that the first teachers you have are you parents or guardians; and there is nothing wrong about that. They are the ones who teach you the simple, yet most important fundamentals, such as having strong morals, teaching you the first words, and guiding you into a world full of adventurous things. How a child is taught at home reflects in school and later on in life; there are things that school cannot teach you and that is where the family institution comes in. Both institutions combined shape a child's personality which allows them to become unique in their own way. With the right involvement, children who have strong family institutions grow to become more confident because they see their roots and have role models to look up to.

It is important for the institution of family and the institution of education to work together because without the support from one, it is very hard to have a successful society. The institution of education helps teach children, however it requires more to have a thriving society. The institution of family is the binding support system that helps children move forward with their educational pursuits. One type of policy that comes to mind that can support family life is our welfare system. Our welfare system helps families that come from low income household with financial assistance. Our Family Counseling Center helps families nurture change and resolve disputes among one another. Constant Arguments in the family can affect the child's development in a negative way causing the child to not believe in themselves with results to not having a thriving society.

The impact of the institution of family is a great way to help children grow up into a community where they can learn and become better humans. The institution of education on the lives of the young children is the most important thing to help assist these children their future life. Both of these entities can work together to ensure a more productive and thriving future society by making more classes out there for children to get involve and/or create community service for families to do together. Types of policies that can support family life can be Fleet ad Family Support Center and Financial Management Assistance. To do something you have to have money too. Having the financial support will stabilize the family. -Zoua Yang
